How Digg Fooled Us All (a Lesson in Marketing).

May 14, 2007 · 5 Comments

The following story is fictional and does not depict any actual person or event:

On May 1st, the following events took place on the internet:

1. Digg got served with a DMCA takedown notice.
2. Jay consulted Digg’s lawyers and they said ignore it.
3. Nevertheless, Jay took down all related links and posted an entry about the matter.
4. Jay ordered his developers to cheat the digg system and digg up every new related link just enough to show up on the front page.
5. Every digger bought into the… hmm… let’s call it a marketing stunt.
6. Digg got huge spike from blogs.
7. Most importantly digg got huge exposure to new audience through TV and newspapers.

Conclusion: Jay is a genius, his film and broadcasting experience paid off here.

But Why? Because between Dec 2006 and April 2007, Digg’s daily reach has been declining and Mr. Investor did not like that :(

Steve Jobs Catch Phrases

November 4, 2006 · 1 Comment

I used to like Steve Jobs’s presentation style (not so much Apple and its products though). And now I know why! Jobs’s uses that same catch phrases over and over again, and they are catchy until you realize that he repeats them all the time. Ah stevey, you no longer amaze me :(

Here are Job’s catch phrases:

Unbelievable
Huge
Pretty cool, huh?
wouldn’t be…
Boom!
Mere mortals

3M - McKnight Principles of Innovation

November 2, 2006 · 3 Comments

William L. McKnight (3M chairman of the board from 1949 to 1966) basic rule of management are:

“As our business grows, it becomes increasingly necessary to delegate responsibility and to encourage men and women to exercise their initiative. This requires considerable tolerance. Those men and women, to whom we delegate authority and responsibility, if they are good people, are going to want to do their jobs in their own way.

“Mistakes will be made. But if a person is essentially right, the mistakes he or she makes are not as serious in the long run as the mistakes management will make if it undertakes to tell those in authority exactly how they must do their jobs.

“Management that is destructively critical when mistakes are made kills initiative. And it’s essential that we have many people with initiative if we are to continue to grow.”
